Starbucks' Americas comp running ahead of consensus, says Cleveland Research » 09:4101/2301/23/20
Cleveland Research analyst Steven Gojak said his industry checks lead him to believe that Americas comps for Starbucks are likely running ahead of consensus expectations for the fiscal first quarter, driven by a combination of cold beverage strength, solid holiday promotions and rewards benefits. The outlook for the rest of FY20 remains "optimistic" based on his work, added Gojak, who has a Neutral rating on Starbucks shares.
Starbucks drivers in place to maintain sales momentum, says Gordon Haskett » 08:0001/2301/23/20
Gordon Haskett analyst…
Gordon Haskett analyst Jeff Farmer sees drivers in place for Starbucks to maintain both U.S. and China sales momentum. When the company reports fiscal Q1 results on January 28, the analyst is looking for earnings per share of 78c, 2c ahead of consensus, and 5% global same-store-sales, above the 4.4% Street estimate. However, Starbucks must continue to deliver on the "step-change" in SSS growth, or even see a modest acceleration, to maintain the stock's "healthy valuation premium," Farmer tells investors in a pre-earnings research note. The analyst maintains a Hold rating on the shares with a $96 price target.

Starbucks announces 'multi-decade commitment' to be 'resource-positive' » 09:2001/2101/21/20
Starbucks CEO Kevin…
Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson announced in a public letter a "multi-decade commitment to be a resource-positive company, aspiring to give more than it takes from the planet." The announcement included science-based preliminary targets for the reduction of carbon emissions, water use and waste by 2030, and outlined five strategies the company has identified to move toward them. The company committed to expanding plant-based options, migrating toward a more environmentally friendly menu; Shifting from single use to reusable packaging; Investing in innovative and regenerative agricultural practices, reforestation, forest conservation and water replenishment in Starbucks supply chain; Investing in better ways to manage waste, both in Starbucks stores and in its communities, to ensure more reuse, recycling and elimination of food waste; Innovating to develop more eco-friendly stores, operations, manufacturing and delivery. Johnson also outlined three preliminary targets for 2030 -- a 50% reduction in carbon emissions in Starbucks direct operations and supply chain, 50% of water withdrawal for direct operations and coffee production will be conserved or replenished with a focus on communities and basins with high water risk, and a 50% reduction in waste sent to landfill from stores and manufacturing, driven by a broader shift toward a circular economy. "On Starbucks 50th anniversary in 2021, the company will formalize its 2030 environmental goals based on learnings between now and then," it noted.
